More about Mia Bergström

Mia Bergström is a Swedish lyrical mezzo-soprano based in Copenhagen. She trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Royal Danish Opera Academy under Professor Kirsten Buhl Møller, graduating in 2019. During her education, she performed a wide range of roles including Cherubino, Olga, Bradamante, Nerone, and Hänsel, and took part in masterclasses with renowned artists such as Bo Skovhus and Anne Sofie von Otter. Mia made her debut at the Royal Danish Opera in 2018 as Ida in J. Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, followed by Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with the Danish National Opera. She later returned to the Royal Danish Opera as La Messaggera in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo with Concerto Copenhagen and conductor Lars Ulrik Mortensen.

Her work spans opera, concert repertoire, early music, church music and vocal ensemble performance. She has appeared as a soloist in Light – Bach Dances at the Royal Danish Theatre, a collaboration between the Hofesh Shechter Company and Concerto Copenhagen, which was later performed at the Philharmonie de Paris.

In recent years, Mia has increasingly explored projects that combine classical singing with storytelling, theatrical expression and new ways of engaging with audiences.

She is the host and storyteller of Peter Pirat – A Baroque Pirate Adventure, an interactive family concert created with the Baroque ensemble Camerata Øresund. Inspired by Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, the performance introduces young audiences to Baroque music through storytelling, singing, humour and audience participation. As “Pirate Mia”, she guides children through a musical adventure filled with storms, animals, magic and the journey towards the mythical Costa Barocca. The production has been performed at venues in Denmark and, in 2026, travelled to Sweden for a performance at Confidencen, the Ulriksdal Palace Theatre.

In 2026, she performed in Ride! Sing! Repeat! at the Copenhagen Opera Festival, bringing opera into streets and public spaces around Copenhagen.

Since 2024, Mia has also been a member of the Copenhagen-based vocal quartet Vokalselskabet FIRE. Her work with the ensemble includes both established and contemporary repertoire, new commissions and interdisciplinary concert projects. In 2026, FIRE premiered Peter Navarro-Alonso’s EN BITTER MANDEL – Ditlevsen Madrigals, composed especially for the ensemble as part of Tove i Toner, a concert programme centred on the writings of Tove Ditlevsen.

Across her work as a soloist and ensemble singer, Mia is particularly drawn to projects where music, text and theatrical expression come together, and to finding new ways of bringing classical music into close contact with its audience.

Vokalselskabet FIRE

VOKALSELSKABET FIRE is a Copenhagen-based female vocal quartet whose members are all active in Denmark's professional classical music scene, performing with institutions including the Royal Danish Opera, the Danish National Opera, the Danish National Concert Choir (DR Concert Choir), and the Church of Our Lady (Copenhagen Cathedral) and other establishments. Educated at leading European conservatoires, the singers combine careers as both soloists and ensemble musicians, with broad experience across the classical vocal repertoire. The members of the ensemble are Julie Bogward-Stampe, Kristine Gether, Katrin Helena Kuslap, and Mia Bergström, who joined the ensemble in 2024.

FIRE is dedicated to performing a cappella music of the highest quality while exploring the possibilities of the classical vocal quartet. The ensemble experiments with concert formats, performance spaces, and repertoire, drawing on classical music as well as folk traditions, contemporary works, and selected music from other genres. The quartet aims to create concerts that appeal not only to established classical audiences but also to listeners who may be new to a cappella singing or classical music. Their programmes are designed to communicate directly with audiences through the expressive possibilities of the human voice. FIRE works as a collaborative ensemble in which every singer contributes to the artistic process. Rehearsals are a space for experimentation, discussion, and careful musical work, with a shared commitment to curiosity, craftsmanship, and musical quality.

TOVE I TONER
2026 marks 50 years since the death of Tove Ditlevsen, one of Denmark’s most important literary voices. Her writing remains strikingly relevant today, with growing interest both in Denmark and internationally. With the concert series Tove i Toner, Vokalselskabet FIRE celebrates Ditlevsen’s words through music, portraying both her melancholic and vulnerable sides and her humour, sensuality and rebellious spirit. The programme combines music by composers including Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, Hugo Alfvén and Anne Linnet with FIRE’s own compositions and arrangements, interwoven with readings from Ditlevsen’s texts. The series premiered on 20 August 2026 in Aabenraa and featured the world premiere of Peter Navarro-Alonso’s EN BITTER MANDEL – Ditlevsen Madrigals, a new work composed especially for Vokalselskabet FIRE and Tove i Toner.

KONERNE MED ÆGGENE - H.C. ANDERSEN IN WORDS AND IMAGES
Konerne med Æggene (The Women with the Eggs) is a concert program by Vokalselskabet FIRE celebrating the imaginative world of Hans Christian Andersen through music, storytelling and visual art. Andersen’s much-loved texts are brought to life through music by composers including Bent Astrup, Bo Holten and Edvard Grieg, creating a musical journey through his distinctive universe of poetry, humour and fairy tales. Throughout the concert, a visual artist creates illustrations inspired by Andersen’s texts live on stage. The drawings are projected onto a large screen, allowing the audience to follow the images as they take shape alongside the music.
